Losing one of the industry's biggest champions, Terry Deglau, a week ago makes this is a perfect throwback image to share today. That's Terry on the left, Monte Zucker at the podium and Clay Blackmore on the right.

The fun of Throwback Thursday is about the memories each old photograph brings back. There's a lot I think about when I look at this photograph.

  • This is probably around the time I first met Terry. He had just started working for Kodak. It's where our friendship kicked off.
  • I was with Hasselblad at the time, and that "kid" next to Monte had only been working with him a short time. This is where my friendship with Clay kicked off too.
  • While we may have lost Monte many years ago, his influence on portraiture is alive and well!
  • Notice the logo behind Terry - WPI started as a wedding photographers association and the second "P" hadn't been added yet.
  • A few months back, I found one of my early badges for WPI, and it sits on a bookshelf with other memorabilia from industry events. Little did I know how influential this show, along with all the friendships, would become over the years ahead.

Repeatedly over the years, I've written about the importance of attending every possible conference and workshop you can work into your schedule. We're an industry built on relationship building. With every program, you attend, your network and in turn, friendships will grow. And, if you're as lucky as I've been, those friendships NEVER stop growing!

Happy Throwback Thursday!

Thanks for the memories...
This is about the time I attended my first Triangle Photographers Association seminar in Pittsburgh and met Terry, Monte, Clay and countless other industry luminaries.
I opened my first studio in 1989 in Shippensburg, PA. Not long after that my film lab sponsored a weekend seminar with Andy and Leticia Torre. Their praise of Triangle convinced me to drive out and see what is was all about. At my first meeting I met Larry Parker. Larry had purchased Terry's Studio and it turns out we had a connection. We had both been wrestlers back in the 70s and had wrestled each other fifteen years before meeting again. Larry took me under his wing and taught me to color print in Terry's old darkroom. He introduced me to print competition and I made most of the prints for my master’s degree right there at Terry's old studio.
I could list almost every top tier photographer in the country at that time who taught at Triangle due in great part to Terry's support through Kodak. There are countless photographers who don't realize how much they have benefited from the education provided by these icons. I remember meeting Tony Corbel at a program he gave using Hasselblad medium format slide projectors and being blown away. I studied with Al Gilbert, Don Blair, Joseph and Louise Simone, Monte, Frank Cricchio, Joyce Wilson, Tim Kelly and countless others that provided the foundation my career was built on.
I feel so fortunate for and credit my success to all the giants of the industry I met and learned from at Triangle. I know what an integral part of the association Terry was and will forever value his contribution to Triangle, the industry and my professional development.
