As the World Goes Mad!

*WARNING* If you're looking for ideas on marketing and business, come back tomorrow. Sunday Morning Reflections is about "me-time" and whatever is on my mind. And on Sunday mornings, it's rarely about business.

Last night, Sheila and I were catching up on our favorite shows we had recorded all week. We were watching Grey's Anatomy when I asked her to hit the pause button. The episode was centered around protestors of the women's clinic and a nut-job who drove his car into two doctors. I don't know why this one hit me so hard, but it got me thinking...I miss the world I used to know!

  • Yesterday I was wearing my Cleveland Indians t-shirt at the Saturday farmer's market, and a vendor commented about my shirt being a collectible. Did the Cleveland Indians really need to change their name?
  • Then there's the controversy over Michelangelo's David - now not being allowed to be included in fine art history in a Florida school. I guess that means I'm in trouble the next time I wear my favorite apron, which we put my Dad in for Halloween at his senior development many years ago.
  • And then there are the Trump protestors along the side of the road just a few miles from here - seriously? What exactly do they think they're protesting?
  • President Biden isn't any better. We were appalled that he opened his press conference after the recent shooting, smiling and keeping it light with a kid in attendance. I get what he was trying to do, but it should have been the closing, not the opening.
  • I'm doing my best to avoid getting started on Congress - the issues no longer matter. We're so polarized that the issue is which party you belong to - not the benefit of Americans.

  • The other day Nick Vedros sent me the shot to the right. We're banning books in the schools, including Dr. Seuss! I feel like I'm trapped in that book-burning scene in Footloose.
  • Then there's the story from the University of California, which no longer refers to people working in the field because, to some people, it may have a reference to slavery. Instead, they're using the word "practicum." And realtors can no longer refer to the main bedroom as "master' for the same reason. I suppose "field-testing" of new products is now off the list, too! I thought we ended this nonsense with "manhole" covers years ago.
  • Last but not least - we recently saw a wedding where the pronoun for each bridesmaid was listed next to her name. I don't care what your choice is, but you've got to pick a side. You don't get to be a "they" unless your name is Sybil!

My list could go on and on, but you get my point. I simply miss what used to be and don't see this as any form of progress. But Sheila has a great line each time we hear another head-shaking story on the news, "Thank God we're old and won't have to deal with this stuff for too many more years!" LOL

On that note, nothing has changed with me wishing you a great day ahead with those people closest to you. You know, the ones where you can just be you. Go for those long therapeutic hugs. The one way to beat the frustrations of the world around you is to make some great memories with those you love!

Happy Sunday or Monday if you're on the other side of the world.

Skip Cohen ("me", "he" and 1/2 of a "we")
