The Tamron Theater

"All of us tend to think of Tamron as a great manufacturer of optics. Let's face it, they make GREAT glass, but there's another aspect to Tamron's incredible presence in the industry. They believe in education and support for photographers who are working professionals, aspiring pros and serious hobbyists. They're all about helping you with the quality of every image you capture, from their workshops and Tailgate Tour to tech support online, Customer Service and all of their educational material.

In the Tamron Theater we're sharing videos, podcasts, guest posts and images from some of the very best artists in the world.

Welcome to the Tamron Theater!"

"On the Road Again"...

It's not just the lyrics to an old Willie Nelson favorite, but the perfect description for the boyz in another episode and adventure. As Tamron's favorite odd couple, Ken and André hit Mono Lake. I love the fact they're at a place I've finally been to and scratched off my bucket list years ago. It's without question an amazing location to photograph.

I particularly love this episode and the addition of André and Ken taking us through a short lesson in night time photography and even a little light painting! Remember, I'm doing screen shots on single frames from the video to share some of the images - imagine what the original files must look like!

Tamron's "Odd Couple" Hits the Road Again...

The boys are at again and while I love the banter back and forth, they're shooting in a place that's been on my personal bucket list for years, Horseshoe Bend and then into Antelope Canyon. I finally figured out what it is about these two that makes this little series such a kick. André made a comment about how they've been traveling together and photographing for twelve or thirteen years.
Picture
Think about the people you work with and the handful you consider truly close friends. Look back on some of your conversations. If you're lucky, maybe you had a few André and Ken moments over the years.

My favorite in this episode is André talking about the best way to land if you fell off the cliff at Horseshoe Bend. I even found myself checking to see what the real fall would be...yup, it's a thousand feet down.

Along with the banter, check out the scenery and where these guys are shooting...it's remarkable!

Tamron Talks: A Podcast with Jonathan Thorpe

Welcome  back to another episode of "Tamron Talks".  We're sharing a few very unique podcasts with some of the most creative artists in our industry, all thanks to Tamron USA. Every post and episode is focused on helping you raise the bar on the quality of your images, your business and sometimes even your dreams.

Jonathan Thorpe is our guest today. At the beginning of April I shared a new "My Photo Exhibits" gallery with you, all featuring his images.  Jonathan was able to sneak in a podcast with me and specifically talk about some of his favorite photographs. In fact, "Forever Alone", the image at the top, which I've shared in previous posts, is still one of my favorites and the image I referred to in my introduction at the start of the podcast. I love the story behind this one...It's Valentine's Day and cupid has delivered ALL of his arrows, but forgot to save one for himself.
Jonathan's Tamron Lenses

SP 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II (model B001)
SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC (model A007)
SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di (model A001)
SP 90mm F/2.8 Di Macro (model 272)

Jonathan shared some great back stories on the images below. So that you really get a feel for how diversified an artist he is, check out his website. Look at all of his galleries. I can promise you won't be disappointed. There's also a great guest post from Jonathan last year about special projects and the making of "Forever Alone".

A Double Feature - On the Road Again with André and Ken...

5/8/2015

The boys are back again with a second episode. This time, one more adventure in Death Valley as they head out to the "Racetrack", which in the end, according to my calculation winds up being a six hour investment with virtually no results. As usual, I love the conversation, which if you followed the original series of "The Odd Couple", Jack Lemmon and Jack Klugman couldn't have done it any better.

This episode, even though there's not a lot of photography involved, does make the point about chasing images. How many times have we all headed out with a camera in hand to some place on the planet that people talked about being amazing to photograph, but there was virtually nothing there? Not every adventure produces results, but they do create some stellar memories!

27 miles of back country unpaved dirt roads...

Now André and Ken battle the elements and a cactus in search of great images around Zion, but again it's the quest for great images you have to love the most! So, I thought it would be fun to make today's post a double feature. A few more minutes to watch and maybe a bigger coffee, while you kick back and enjoy watching the "Boyz" search for the ultimate image!

They really are Lemmon and Klugman as Ken brings all the right gear and sets up before dawn with a tripod and André levels the camera with some snow and I think his wallet. You've got to love these two!

Finally having Mother Nature cut them a little slack and bring out the sun, they practically run up the trail in Zion in hopes of capturing one perfect vista.

...and when you've got the shot you've simply got the shot! It's one of those feelings we can all relate to, some more than others.

Catch the third episode of Tamron's Field Guide below, but even better catch the Tailgate Tour live. Here's the schedule for the rest of May and your opportunity to pick up some great tips from one of the finest teams of tech reps and artists in the industry!

Tamron Talks: A Podcast with Monica Royal

Picture
Welcome  back to another post/episode of "Tamron Talks". We're going to be sharing some unique podcasts with some of the most creative artists in our industry with several goals: to help you raise the bar on the quality of your images, your business and here and there maybe even a few pointers on chasing your dreams.

A couple of weeks ago I shared a new "My Photo Exhibits" gallery with you, all featuring the work of fine art photographer Monica Royal. I was able to catch up to her earlier today for a great podcast. Monica is clearly an artist who has succeeded in chasing her dream.
Picture
Her first adult career was in criminology and in this podcast she talks very openly about the challenges it created, including stifling her creative soul. She came into the photography world as a portrait artist and as she describes, kept finding herself looking more and more into the macro world.

Monica shares some wonderful insight into her journey as an artist and even shared some detail on the three images featured here. She's a remarkable artist and is fast becoming a great friend. Her images are stunning and take the viewer to places virtually all of us would normally miss.

Monica needs to be on your radar...

Check out her images, her blog and her website.  And, with one more click, swing by Tamron's Image Masters to keep track of some of the most talented and creative artists in the industry!

Plus, Monica's teaching/show schedule over the next few months is below. If she's teaching in your area, run, don't walk to get a seat. The only thing more impressive than her talent as an artist is her passion and enthusiasm for the craft!

"Beauty and tone...Do you see footprints?"

The news doesn't get any fresher than this announcement just a few hours ago...

Tamron USA announced today their first foray into "phototainment" with Season 1 of a video series designed to entertain while teaching valuable photo tips for all levels of photographers. Launched in conjunction with year two of their national Tailgate Tour to promote photography, the six-episode series captures the adventures of two photo road warriors as they make their way across the country, capturing some of the most beautiful photo vistas in the United States. The series features photographer and filmmaker André Costantini, and portrait and landscape photographer Ken Hubbard.
If there was an Oscar for educational videos in photography, these two would have my vote hands down. If you remember the old comedy series, they really are taking an "Odd Couple" approach to their travels and here's just one example...they're up at 4:45 in the morning to photograph Death Valley. They look like two ants as they hike up the dunes, only for Ken to be disappointed over all the footprints in the sand and André ecstatic over the contrast, looking beyond the slightly spoiled landscape. I love the conversation...
