The Difference Between Bare Heads and Light Shaping Tools

Profoto isn't just dedicated to great technology, but helping artists raise the bar on their images. They've created an incredible archive of great videos, most of them making a point in 3-5 minutes. Jared Platt does another outstanding job in this short video with the help of two Profoto B2 heads and one Profoto B1.

I've written a lot about one of my pet peeves - new photographers who describe themselves as "natural light specialists'. We all love the softness of window light, but the majority of the time these photographers just haven't taken the time to learn lighting.  Jared and Profoto are always focused on helping photographers understand lighting and nobody does it better! Each video is loaded with content and comparison images to help you understand the key technique being shared.

Michael Blue - In the Spotlight

One of the most fun things about social media is never knowing what kind of response a post might generate. Last week I shared a short Profoto video and Michael Blue from Carlsbad, California commented in the GoingPro forum on Facebook.  Michael wrote:

"I'm the proud papa of (3) B1 500 TTLs along with many Profoto light modifiers. Great, easy, flexible but not cheap."

He then went on and posted the image above with the following comment:

"I even use for outdoor landscapes at certain locations. One B1 light used here. Light can be up to 1000 ft away from camera."

I love the image above and to Michael's comment, Profoto is a perfect example of that old one-liner, "you get what you pay for!"

If you'd like more information about Michael and his work, follow him on Facebook. When I asked him for permission to share this image he also showed me another application. It's the perfect image for his phone's wallpaper!

And, for those of you who never saw any of the original videos when the B1 launched in the fall of 2013, watch this short piece below and think about the technology involved in creating these images!

In the 175+ year history of photography there have never been more tools available for photographers to truly become better artists. A whole series of those tools are thanks to Profoto's Off-Camera Flash Systems, the B1 and B2s.

Think about it for just a second - what kind of images could you capture/create if there were simply no restrictions on your control you over lighting. Their Off-Camera Flash Systems give artists the ability to go anywhere, and this video featuring the work of  Sandra Åberg demonstrates just that point on a remote beach.

I love these videos because their share so much content without one word of narrative. Plus Profoto continues to introduce new accessories and this video features three versions of the Umbrella Deep – silver, white and translucent.

To see more of Sandra Åberg's work visit her website. She's an artist sharing some stunning images. And, if you want to find out more about Profoto's extensive lighting systems and accessories, just click the link below.

Intro by Skip Cohen

It's another content-rich video thanks to Profoto and Christoph Jorda. Incredible images and technique, all in under three minutes. Yes, it's an infomercial for the game-changers in lighting, Profoto's Off-Camera Flash System, but there's so much more here.

Without one single line of narrative, Christoph Jorda shares a vision, complete with preparation and then stunning results. Keep in mind the images I'm sharing here are screen shots from the video, which proves one key point: Quality in = Quality out!

Christoph set up these images with two B1 Off-Camera Flashes set to high-speed sync mode and then captured one amazing image after another. Check out more of Christoph's work with a visit to his website.
