One of the things I plan for when I go on a trip, of course, is photography! Do I have the cameras, lenses, batteries, SD cards, tripod, laptop, ….? But for our mobile lifestyle, it’s getting more important to travel light… fortunately it is getting easier too!

After years of using a DSLR, I now use a mirrorless Lumix camera, and feel no sacrifice of quality- just the benefit of mirrorless and light weight! I can also carry a tablet, a tiny tripod, (or no tripod) and I can pretty much create whatever I want on the road. I will often wifi my images straight to my phone to process the images in either Lightroom Mobile OR Snapseed to get that polished punch I love, especially for social media.

Posting and sharing is vital but I end up wanting to share my ReelStories! There’s nothing quite as stirring and real as the video or the slideshow (or hybrid) of a series of images from the event that tells the story beautifully with music and transitions! Video and slideshows make a story far more compelling, let’s face it.

Selecting the theme and music and energy is all easy with the touch screen and the magic just happens! I even edited it a few times and removed some effects I was not fond of…. Changed the music too!

Neal Clipper is in the spotlight today, and it's especially fun for me to do this podcast. Neal and I have known each other for a whole lot of years going back to my earliest days at WPPI. He's based out of New Jersey and in one of the most competitive markets in professional wedding photography. One thing I've learned about Neal over the years, he never slows down. He's proof that hyperactive kids grow up and have careers! LOL

In 2009 I spent three weeks at Hallmark Institute doing public portfolio reviews. One of the other "judges" was Gregory Heisler. The process was pretty basic. Each of the almost two hundred students, one at a time, would put up their portfolio (actual prints), and each of the three judges would critique the work.

The three judges approached each student's work from a different perspective. For Gregory, it was often about the power of the images. Over and again he'd show how changing the composition and cropping of an image would add impact and completely change the story. Each time Gregory would critique a portfolio, I often learned as much as the students.

This week Suzette Allen is sharing something very different from her usual content and I LOVE IT! So many of you share images in the various forums that could be unforgettable, but because you ignored composition and cropping they become underwhelming. Just like Gregory, Suzette is sharing an outstanding set of tips to make your images more memorable!

You're artists, but many of you have forgotten a few of the ground rules. That doesn't mean you have to stick to them all the time, but as my old friend Don Blair used to say, "You have to know the rules before you have the right to break them!"

Creating great slideshows isn't just about still images, video, and great music. You need terrific images to make your work more habit-forming. Photodex is giving you everything you need to put them together, but it's your skill set and mind's eye visions that capture the images and create presentations that exceed expectations!

You've got the biggest selection of creative tools in the 190+ year history of photography, and between Photodex and Suzette there's a never-ending supply of ideas to raise the bar on every image you share!

Balance is key- In life, in time management, in business and, yes, especially in photography! When we tell stories, we want our images to look pleasing and convey our message without distractions. We want to get to the point, or have viewers SEE our point quickly and clearly, not confused about the message. Many of those things can be accomplished by simply paying attention to composition and placing the important parts on the “power points” of composition.

Ideally, you would do this in camera when you capture an image, but it’s not vital. I believe in exploring a subject in every way and angle and vantage point to capture the strongest image. That means I evaluate later and many times, crop my image differently than the way I shot it. Sometimes you hit it perfectly- as if it was your 7th sense, but it’s great to know the tools to crop later if needed.
 
Let’s take a look at the typical cropping guides. The guidelines are overlaid on your image and the most impactful elements are placed on the intersections of segments. The points where they intersect are called the Power Points.

The first one, the Rule of Thirds, is probably the most common and the 4 intersections are easy to visualize for good composition. I also enjoy the Golden Spiral, based on the Fibonacci Sequence and use it quite a lot, placing my impact subject very near a corner. Triangles are another favorite, capitalizing on the diagonal line of energy!
 
Did you know, all of these overlays are available in PS and LR when you are in the crop tools? While you are using the crop tool, just press the “O” key to cycle through them to find the ones that fit best. When you get to one that has a right and left (like the triangle) or all 4 orientations, (like the golden spiral) press Shift+O and they will cycle through the options showing all positions. Once you get used to doing this, you will ALWAYS use this when cropping. Actually, after doing this for so many years, we develop an innate sense of what looks good, but it is still validating to see the overlay and know we are on the mark!
 
Because I want to be able to visualize these power points when I shoot, I overlapped all the cropping guides into one document and placed a red dot on each power point. Isn’t it interesting how they all line up on the diagonal, almost in a perfect line extending from the four corners? Once you are aware of that, you can visualize in your viewfinder when you are shooting to be conscious of those points and purposely shoot with good composition!
Here are some images that I modified with cropping to increase the impact. Any crop is permissible; it is a matter of taste; However, there are some stronger than others.

In this case, I photographed Rose centered in one, and in a perfect triangle in the other. The centered crop is ok, with a nice diagonal line of light in the grass, but I still liked it better cropped in the triangles pattern.

With my plum tree blossoms, a much tighter crop simplified the image and message. Then I painted it, giving it a soft delicate side and mood.

In this image, which I love, the gravestone was in the wrong position. But there was no way to shoot it with all the elements and have it be where I wanted. Photoshop to the rescue! I cut the gravestone out and moved it to where it looked best, and then finished the image. I love the light and the drama of this image. It is certainly a stronger composition with the headstone on the power point.
 
Next time you shoot pictures, think about mentally drawing that line from the corners and try to position the important subjects on the power points. Then check it and see how you did later on in PS or LR! Have fun.

We have been telling you about so many great features with Pro Show Web, and my guess is many of you have tried it and already purchased it, seeing its value! However, my husband Jon, (mister techy), reminded me this week that Photodex has THE BEST TRIAL system ever, and I should let the readers know! And I heartily agree, because while MOST software companies offer the typical 30 day trial (which we sometimes don’t get around to using in time!!) this one is different! I actually wish more companies subscribed to this way of thinking!
 
So here is how it works: First of all, the Trial is FOREVER! Yeah! No kidding! You can use it and make as many shows as your lil’ heart desires for as long as you want!!  J  Ah, but yes, there IS a catch! What they DO limit, is a few features like the number of images or videos you can use in each show. So that means you can use a maximum of 15 files (any mix of videos or stills). It’s actually plenty to see how it works and make some cute shows. That's one of my favorite short shows above. It only has 13 files, including my logo slide!
 
A few other limitations… not the full selection of music is included…and not quite ALL the themes. There’s still lots of great options and all the customization capabilities are there so you can see how easy it is to make what you want!

When it comes to output, it will make a nice low rez (the default) but you can’t export it at full HD resolution with the trial. And one more thing—there’s a small credit line in the bottom edge and the last splash page that says it was created with ProShowWeb… that’s fair enough!
 
What I think is really thoughtful, though, is that when you DO fall in love with their product and actually purchase it, all the trial shows are still there! Nothing lost. And all you need to do is hit “rebuild” and each show will be rebuilt without the ProShow credits! I mean, how thoughtful is that? And of course, you can further modify any of them as well, since they are all intact, when you convert the account to a paid service. J I’m thinking this is a great deal.
 
So, while this article is a little more techy and not so creative, it’s a great thing to know about if you are thinking about trying out Pro Show before you buy! (or if you have friends who are curious). So, Let’s Get Creative and make some fun slide shows on them…. This past April we shared a "Building Your Business" podcast with Cory Ryan. Just listening to a few minutes of the recording and you can tell Cory loves being a wedding photographer. In fact, just the tone of her voice during the interview is contagious!

I shared her slide show in an earlier post, but all you need to watch is the first minute or so and then think about how you'd share your own images. It's all soft-sell - no pitch, just great music and images.
• She never compromises on the quality of anything she does - from her images to her relationships with her clients, the priority is always on providing the very best service and exceeding expectations.

One of the biggest factors in setting the mood for your images and slideshows is Music.  It is a vital element that can instantly set the tone of happy and energetic, or moody and dramatic with the same exact images!

I generally pick out my song early in the process when I am designing a show, so I can get in the mood and pace, especially if I am making a custom show. However, with Pro Show Web, which pretty much makes it for me, it’s not nearly as critical to choose your music early in the design process. [but it still helps to get you in the mood!]

Choosing music that is fitting can take time, too. You don’t want to just pick any song—it really needs to be a good tune- with the right feel. We tend to pick songs we like, although they may not do your story justice.

Here’s a great tip:  I saw a fabulous program by Roy Ashen of  Triple Scoop Music a couple years ago that was SO helpful in picking music. He said to choose three words that describe the person, the mood, the emotion or style/feeling you want to portray in your visual story, then listen to the music selections to decide if they support those three words. (instead of just choosing a tune you like).

It works like magic and gets you out of your personal music box and into some more exciting genres. Incidentally, I often use Triple Scoop Music, as they are one of the best royalty-free Music Providers in the industry. However, since Photodex provides such a great selection in their service (which is included in the price) I also use PSW (ProShow Web) music anytime it fits the mood! 
 
Here’s a big factor in music choosing—TIME! It is so helpful to have a good search criteria to find songs, because it can take a while, depending on how obsessed you are! I’ll be honest, too; I usually want to rush through that process—especially in Senior Season! It is a lifesaver that PSW allows you to mark your favorite songs and put them into your special favorites collection!

Summer's here and it's time to think about how you can make your summer themed slideshows and images top notch.

I write almost the same thing every time, but that's only because so many of you are still dragging your feet bringing slideshows into your product/services lineup. From seniors, to thank you "notes," telling a client's special story and even your own marketing show, there's nothing that will help build your brand more than exceeding client expectations with great slideshows!

Summer is upon us and many of us are planning our vacations and getaways with the family! It’s a great time to get creative and not only share the fun you have and sights you see, but make it fun to remember the moments and good times later, when you are back to the grind and the snow is on the way! We all know that photographs are the very best aid to our memory, and when viewed with music in an audio-visual show is becomes a hook that our memories love!

Even if it is just a short glimpse of fun you happened upon, like this Balloon Regatta, it has so much potential for great memories and creativity!

We were in Page, AZ for the Slot Canyon safari and Horseshoe Bend last summer. We were packing up to go home on the last day when we heard there was a Balloon Regatta in town! We scooted out with our cameras at sunrise and had an eye-full of color and fun for about two hours. It was truly magical! This little show is a glimpse of the fun and the beautiful weather and colorful sights!  The addition of video is especially fun and so great at storytelling! Even though it was only two hours, this memory makes it even more memorable!

Most of these shows were from short events lasting only hours! What fun! But sometimes we go on big adventures where many of our family members and friends cannot go.

We climbed up to the Delicate Arch in Arches National Park this past year and it was so unforgettable! This show features a 360 degree video of the view at the top. Yes, mom loved it-because she will never be able to make that hike! It’s almost like being there—[or almost better because you get to hear the soundtrack! HAHA!]

This show is one of my favorites called “Here with Me”, where we can share our visual experiences, adding audio and movement to engage the viewer at a much deeper level, feeling and seeing what it was like to be there with us!

Suzette Allen's slideshow above is the perfect example of how ProShow gives you the ability to customize your presentations without going overboard.

Think about it for a second. If you've been in the industry ten years or more, you can see the transition of trends in creativity thanks to technology. Wander back a few years and we saw a trend of too many artists becoming filter junkies. Images, that might have been fine with the simplicity of the quality of the photograph itself, were being overloaded with filter effects. Then there were bad images to start which people felt could be enhanced by adding more filters. That led me to me sharing one of my most favorite expressions I heard years ago, "You can't buff a turd!"

(Note: And yes, after using the expression a long time ago, somebody sent me the Myth Busters episode where they proved you could buff one! LOL)

The truth is, less is more, but to Suzette's point in today's post, as more artists create slideshows we're seeing the same phenomenon as we did with filters. Instead of simplicity and a clean flow of images and videos we're often seeing too many special effects. We're not able to appreciate the images, because we're distracted by too many elements in the presentation.

This might be one of my favorite posts from Suzette, because it's a solid reminder that less is more and Photodex has given you the tools to create stunning presentations, without losing the impact of your skill set to tell the story.

We want it to just flow and not have distractions--Like when certain effects are OVER-used and feel repetitive, or sometimes the effect is overpowering for the image. Or, when my video is on the shorter side and the effects gobble up the viewing time too much! I just need a simple Cut transition so I can see the full video impact!
 
In other similar services, you just have to “Rebuild, and hopefully you like it”…. And if not you “REbuild and HOPEfully you like it”…. and if not, just “REBUILD, and HOPEFULLY you LIKE it!”… and each time you get a new mix and even the stuff you LIKED is gone and remixed! AACK!

Soooo…. In short, ProShowWeb just rocks.

I can just hit Edit Show and see my show in a sequence and selectively delete or change my effects, my transitions, and even my timing if I want to see a special image just a little longer! And, an added bonus is the final credit slide—It drives me crazy when it gets sliced and diced and flung here and there….I just add Zero Motion Fill Frame for that simple statement of my logo: WHO did this cool show. I love the fact that they offer SO many options, too, BUT had the foresight to create the needed feature of Favorites, where I can save time hunting and grab the ones I know will work, if I’m rushed!

I’m thrilled with the way ProShowWeb does 98% of all the heavy lifting of making dynamite shows, but super thankful they give me the freedom to fine tune to make it Juuuuust Right!
