A Terrific Reminder - Making Prints

It's just a two-minute tip, but it's a perfect reminder that we still live in a tactile world! In this new clip, David Bergman shares the perfect reminder this time of year about giving prints as gifts to clients and associates. Why do I think it's perfect this time of year? Because for most of you, it's still the slow season and the perfect time to select some images for making prints.

I'm a firm believer in the concept, which is why my home looks like a gallery. Over the years, kicking off in my Hasselblad days, I started collecting prints. Remember, back then there was no digital technology, so when somebody wanted to say "thanks" or just share some images, actual printed work was the only way. So, our home is loaded with prints.

What's amazing is the response visitors have to a home filled with photography. It's just not something people see very often, and each print has a story behind it.  For example, the two images on the right are by David Michael Kennedy. He had borrowed a Hasselblad lens and sent me these two prints as a thank you. They're both signed and two of my favorites.

Picture
The other image is the wall of my office. There's a story behind each print. From Steve McCurry's Afghan Girl to a print Jerry Ghionis entered in WPPI print competition and Virginia Adams with Ansel's Cadillac and his rear license plate, every print represents a milestone point in my career.

David's message in this video is the perfect reminder to share your most favorite images. What better way to say thanks to people who have been helpful to you or simply to share with good friends?

Just one reminder, though, always sign them.  When Joe Buissink and I wrote his last book, he talked about how he always gives a framed print to his bridal clients when they come in to review their images. It's a special way he can surprise them, and he always signs their print. Why? Because he wants to remind them, he's an artist, not just a photographer!

Intro by Skip Cohen

I usually dig back through the archives of Adorama TV on YouTube, but this was just posted this week and I love it. First, it really shows my good friend Tamara's skill in doing interviews on camera. She's become one of the very best! Second, it's an interesting interview talking about photography in a different direction than many of her other guests.

Here's a description of Jesse Kalisher's background and business from the Kalisher Art is Love website:

We are the artists. This means that we have the maximum flexibility to either curate or create art—and if we create something unique for you, we can customize it any way you like quickly and at no additional cost to you.

Led by renowned artists Jesse and Helen Kalisher, our creative team curates and customizes art right here in our studio every day, responding with ease and flexibility to whatever direction and input you offer. At our best, we're engaged in a creatively collaborative process that delivers the right art for your project each and every time.

We can even provide location shoots for you at little or no cost through our President and world-renowned photographer (his work is in The Smithsonian and The Louvre among other notable places). Ultimately, because we're artists—be it abstract, three-dimensional art or photography—our work or someone else’s—we won't bring you the same round of art over and over again because that's not who we are and that's not how we work.

Enjoy this new interview from reDefine and then check out the Art is Love website, especially the diversity of their galleries. Just click on the gallery page below. Then wander over to Adorama TV - they're coming up on 1500 videos in the archives! Each one is interesting and many are "how-to" pieces designed to help you raise the bar on your skill set.

The images above are screen shots from Joe McNally's video below.
Watch the video to see the complete image and hear Joe's explanation of how they were captured.
One of the biggest challenges for so many photographers, both new to the industry and even a few seasoned professionals is when to use a flash. In fact, lighting, in general, is typically at the top of many artists' greatest needs in their technique skill set.

Nobody does it better than Joe McNally when it comes to compact, to the point videos on technique. In this great "Photo on the Go" video from 2014, Joe takes us through some great "how-to" content. This is just one of 52 videos featuring Joe in the Adorama TV archives on YouTube. Just like their slogan says, they're "more than a camera store."

It's that time of year. A time when a lot of photographers are deciding on new gear for the year ahead. Make sure you visit Adorama and check out their product selection as well as terrific pricing. Plus, if you're looking for a high ticket item, but think you'd like to test drive it first, don't forget about rental! Rental give you a way to utilize Adorama's capital without depleting yours!

And, don't forget to keep track of Joe's teaching schedule this year. You'll find it all in the workshop section of his website.

Lighting Positions - A Quick Review with Comparison Images

There's so much incredible content in Adorama TV's archives, especially under the category of lighting. In this episode that aired just two months ago, Adorama's Daniel Norton presented "OnSet's" sixty-first episode and it's perfect to kick off the new year.

For many of you understanding lighting is your biggest challenge. In this episode, Daniel demonstrates lighting positions and fill lights to change the mood of classic portraiture, complete with comparisons. He's packed a lot into just five minutes.

Over and again I've heard photographers describe themselves as "natural light" specialists as if it's something they worked hard to achieve. The truth, for many of them, is they're into natural light because they haven't taken the time to master studio lighting.

There are over 1400 videos posted on AdoramaTV, but this one is from their "Advanced" technique section. It's just a click away with 68 advanced tutorials, each helping you focus on raising the bar on your skill set!

Tamara Lackey Interviews Dixie Dixon on the reDefine Show

PictureA Dixie Dixon classic!
Intro by Skip Cohen

There's so much great content in the AdoramaTV archives on YouTube. Plus, it's, even more, fun finding another interview featuring two of my friends, Tamara Lackey and Dixie Dixon. Tamara and I have worked on so many different projects together. She and Dixie are also both members of the SCU Faculty. They both offer some stellar advice for photographers just starting out.  (Visit Tamara's faculty page and then check out Dixie's.)

I first met Dixie when she won WPPI's Hy Sheanin Scholarship in 2008. It was her first big convention, but even as a rookie, her poise and passion for the craft were obvious. Since then her work has appeared in magazines all over the world, and she's set the standard for behind the scenes videos, now a regular part of her coverage for each client.

There's some great content in this interview. You can also learn a lot watching Dixie in action on a live shoot in a video included in this episode of Tamara's reDefine show.

If you're looking for more inspiration from one outstanding guest after another, including Tamara sharing tips to help you raise the bar on your images and business, check out all the past episodes. There are 63 videos in the archives!

Posted just under a year ago, I found this short video on lighting featuring the "Master", Joe McNally. I love the simplicity of the way he teaches. He's always easy to understand, and with the diagrams he adds as he's teaching, it's easy for so many of you to raise the bar on your technique.
There are 1418 videos in the Adorama TV archives and each one covers a slightly different topic and captures the techniques of dozens of different artists. It's one of the largest educational archives in photography. Plus, Adorama is a Profoto dealer, so, for example, if you have an interest in the ring light Joe demonstrates in the video, it's only a click away to find out more.
Joe McNally is one of the finest educators in photography. If he's teaching/speaking at a workshop near you, run don't walk to get a seat. Bookmark his workshop schedule. It might look light now, but it'll be filling up throughout the new year.

You can select each video to meet your personal needs for building stronger techniques and a more in-depth understanding of imaging.

I especially love these short OnSet videos. They hit just a couple of points and with each 2-3 minute video they can help you raise the bar on your skill set and the quality of your images. Plus, in these three videos you'll also pick up the added benefit of getting to know Profoto gear just a little bit better.

A Bryan Peterson Trifecta

There are over 120 episodes of "You Keep Shooting" with Bryan Peterson in the Adorama archives on YouTube. While some of you might consider the concepts Bryan is sharing for beginners, they're great refresher mini-courses for more established artists. Think of them as reminders to keep stepping outside the box and mixing up your techniques.

I found three short videos I wanted to share. I guess I've just looked at too many portfolios and galleries where every image was pretty much the same. Each of these videos are like a vitamin for creativity.

Check out all of Adorama TV's videos - there are just under 1350 of them and every week there are more added to the stash! It's just a click away!
